About Catherine Stumph

Notes on Catherine (possibly Stumph):

There are no proven records to indicate the marriage of Edward Smith and Catherine Stumph that have been located by this researcher, although much family tradition has indicated that he married a Catherine Stumph as his first wife. Edward must have had an earlier wife, due to the ages of his children, since his second wife (Catherine Stonecypher) would have been too young to have been their mother. In researching the Stumph family of Virginia, there was a Michael Stump (not to be confused with the Michael Stump of Hamshire County, Virginia) that MAY have been related to Catherine Stumph (much younger than Catherine), as listed in the following from "Michael Stump of Virginia, 1708-1796":

However, a Michael Stump, formerly of Culpeper County, Virginia, did file a Revolutionary War pension claim on April 4, 1834, in Tazewell County, Virginia. The pension claim states the claimant was seventy years old when the claim was filed. Born in 1764, he is clearly not the Senior, Junior or Michael III, since the latter emigrated to Harrison County sometime around 1800 and died there (then Lewis County, Virginia, which was formed in 1816 from Harrison County) on March 27, 1834.

The following excerpt from Chalkley's Augusta County, Virginia abstracts leads one to believe that Michael Stumph is probably related in some way (perhaps a brother). Nicholas Smith attended this meeting in 1757, this could be Nicholas Smith, son of Catherine and Edward Smith:
