Facts and Events
Cargill, July 16, 1890 "Hillhurst", the residence of H. Cargill, M.P. was this morning the scene of the wedding of his daughter, Carlotta Jane, to W.F. Freeman, M.D. of Walkerton, and son of Dr. C. Freeman of Milton. Miss Cargill's popularity amongst the employees of her father, and their families, of which the village is chiefly composed, made the occasion one of more than ordinary interest to them. Many were there expressions of regret at her departure, and good wishes for her future happiness. Besides acting as organist, both at the church services and in the Sabbath School, she was always willing to assist in any entertainment got up by the villagers, or lend a helping hand where she found it was needed. These, with her many other estimable qualities, rendered her a general favorite. The wedding took place at 8 a.m., Rev. D. Campbell and Rev. Dr. James of Walkerton officiating. Miss Annie Stewart of Guelph acted as bridesmaid, and Mr. W.D. Cargill, brother of the bride, supported the groom. The bride wore a dress of white poplin, trimmed with vandyke crepe lisse, and in her hand she carried a bouquet of white roses. Miss Stewart wore a dress of cream French delaine, and carried a bouqet of pink roses. The drawing room in which the ceremony took place was beautifully decorated with flowers, while over the bride and groom hung a horseshoe, formed of carnations and white lillies. After the ceremony the guests repaired to the dining room, which was also artistically decorated wit flowers, evergreens and bunting, and partook of the wedding breakfast, which was uniquely arranged, under the personal supervision of Mr. George Williams, of Guelph. The bridal party were subsequently escorted to the station where they took the 10:55 train for an extended tour through the Eastern States. Those present were many and valuable. Among the guests who were present are the following: Dr. & Mrs. Freeman, Milton; Dr. and Mrs. Freeman, Rock Springs, Mich; Mr. & Mrs. Bricker, Listowel; Mr. and Misses Cargill, Wingham; the Misses Stewart, Guelph; Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Freeman, Milton; Mr. and Mrs. Dempsey, Mr. D. Wheelihan, Mr., Mrs. and Miss Bowes, Toronto and Mr. W.C. Freeman of Georgetown."
