- Borgar Vetrlidesson HæmEst 1275 - 1336
▼Facts and Events
Borgar was involved in a brawl in which Halvor Erlingsson from Haukvik injured Borgar with a pike and assaulted and insulted Borgar's wife Aslaug. Borgar and his sons retaliated, resulting in various injuries and the death of Halvor Erlingsson.
A lawsuit resulted. On one side were Tor Låvell, Erling Haukvik (Halvor's father), their sons, and other people from Haukvik. On the other side were people from Hæm and Lindheim. Erling Haukvik accused Borgar and his son Aulvir of killing Halvor Erlingsson.
The ruling (by Eirik Steinarsson) was handed down 13 Dec 1337, and ordered each side to pay the other several amounts - one side for the original injury and insults and the other for injuries and the death of Halvor Erlingsson. Borgar and his sons Vetrlide and Aulvir were all mentioned by name, and ordered to pay certain amounts.
In 1336, a Vetrlide Borgarsson was summoned to Efteløt parish in Sandsvær regarding an inheritance court case, but his father Borgar Vetrlidesson went instead. There was a dispute over the inheritance and Borgar fought with Jon Sigurdsson, who killed Borgar with two axe blows.
Kirkeby appears to be unsure about whether the Borgar Vetrlidesson who was killed in Lund in 1336 is the same Borgar Hæm who was in the brawl that killed Halvor Erlingsson, since the latter is ordered by make and receive payments in the Dec 1337 ruling. On 2:605, he suggests that they might have been related to each other or might have been the same person. On 2:606, he implies that they were the same person.

translation (with help from Google translate): Vetrlide Borgarsson's eldest son was Borgar Vetrlidesson (killed in 1336), married to Aslaug. All things considered, she was the sister of Torleiv Saksabjørnsson and Bjørn Saksabjørnsson of Lindheim. In a document from 1337, Hem and Lindheim people were considered to be one (extended) family. When a final judgment was made in the matter between them and Haukvik folk, Borgar of Hem had been killed in Lund in Sandsvær (DN I 239). In an inheritance case in Sandsvær in 1336, Vetrlide, Borgar's son, was summoned, but Borgar attended instead. There was contention over the legacy, and Borgar got into a fight with Jon Sigurdsson, who gave Borgar two ax strikes so he died.

'Ein Borgar Vetrlidesson blei drepen på Lund i Sandsvær i 1336 (sjå DN II 189). Han var innstemnd til Efteløt og var truleg utabygds frå. Det er mogleg han var i slekt med Borgar Hem. Kansje var han til og med denne Borgar Hem.'
translation: A Borgar Vetrlidesson was killed in Lund in Sandsvær in 1336 (see DN II 189). He was summoned to Efteløt and was probably from outside the community. It is possible that he was related to Borgar Hem. Maybe he even was this Borgar Hem.
