Bessie Mildred Parkison, 92, Wolf Lake resident died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, 1993 in The Oaks at Columbia City where she had been a patient since 1990. She was born on March 29, 1901 in Noble Township, near Wolf Lake, a daughter of Abe and Mae Thorn Fuller. She was educated in the Wolf Lake School and in 1917, started her employment with Roy Parkison in his general store, called Parky’s in downtown Wolf Lake. In 1919, she was married to Mr. Parkison and they resided above the store until 125, when they moved to Huntertown to raise onions. After a year, they returned to Wolf Lake and purchased property on Onion Avenue and raised onions and began growing fruit and vegetables to sell in a roadside market on U.S. 33. Later, they bought a tavern next to their old general store, which they operated for 14 years. Mr. Parkison preceded her in death in March 1963. Her church affiliation was with the Wolf Lake Baptist Church. Mrs. Parkison has also served as the grand marshal for the Onion Days parade in Wolf Lake. The surviving relatives include three sons, George Parkison, Knapp Lake, John Parkison and Don Parkison both of Wolf Lake; 14 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and a great great grandson. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Prince, a son, Frank and two sisters, Mary Heintzelman and Lillian Heintzelman. The funeral services were Friday at the Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The Rev. Dan Carlson, pastor of the Wolf Lake Baptist Church, officiated. The burial was in the Thorn Cemetery at Ormas. |
