Margaret Watson Cooke's genealogy: a well-known school teacher in Barry, Illinois.

Written by Ruth Palmer Short: Sister Bess was so eager to start to school she was sent to a private school (as were all three of us, but not at such an early age). When she started to public school at age 7, the legal age, she was placed in the 4th grade. Since she was too young for college, she spent 1908-09 in Barry with Aunt Bess and Grandpa Stearns and took courses in Botany, Latin etc. She graduated at North Texas State Normal--took part in basketball & dramatics. she later received her BA degree from SMU, Dallas. After her children were of school age she taught in Barry High School many years - English, Latin, acting as librarian, coached dramatics, plays, declamation contests. She belonged to the Methodist Church and taught a Sunday School Class of high school pupils for a number of years. She was active in the pike Co. Historical Association, Retired Teachers, American legion Auxiliary, served 49 years on the Barry Library Board. She was a member of the Nancy Ross Chapter DAR, Mayflower Society, Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, the Pilgrim John Howland Society, Ntional Society of the Dames of the Court of Honor, Magna Charta Dames, Americns of Royal Descent, The Plantagenet society, Colonial Order of the Crown, Descendcants of the Knights of the Order of the Garter, Daughters of the War of 1812.
