Bertram Stanley May was born on 9th February 1895 at Plymouth in Devon, son of Louisa Kate May, formerly Harry, and her husband William May, a compositor printer. Bertram appears in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses living with his parents and siblings at Pear Tree Cottage, 21 John Street, Plymouth. By 1911 he was working as a printer's errand boy. Bertram's father died in 1911, when Bertram was 16 years old.
After the First World Ward, in 1920 Bertram married Nellie Frances Dorothy, who was from Exeter. They married in the Exeter area but then returned to Plymouth, where they had two children during the 1920s. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Bertram was living at 7 Longfield Place in Plymouth and working as a solicitor's clerk.
Bertram died in 1975, aged 80. Nellie outlived him by eleven years.
