Alice Maud Mary May was born on 16th March 1888 at Plymouth in Devon. She was the daughter of a compositor printer named William May and his wife Louisa Kate Harry. The family lived at Pear Tree Cottage, 21 John Street, Plymouth. Alice was not baptised as a baby, but when she was 21 years old. She was baptised at St Luke's Church in Plymouth on 23rd October 1909 - the same church in which her sister Louisa had married three days earlier (Alice had been one of the witnesses to the marriage).

Alice never married, and appears to have stayed living with her mother. A couple of letters from Alice to her sister Winifred from the 1920s remain in the possession of Winifred's descendants. Alice always refers to herself and 'Ma', suggesting they were still living together. Alice died in 1938, aged 50, having only outlived her mother by five years.
