BERTHA C DEVORE

BERTHA C DEVORE HYNDMAN, Pa. Bertha Catherine DeVore, 86, of Water Street, formerly of Tiger Valley, Hyndman, died Sunday morning, Oct. 15, 2000, at her residence. Born April 26, 1914, in Madley, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Webster and Ella Virginia (Coughenour) Yutzy. She also was preceded in death by one brother, Joe Yutzy; and four sisters, Margaret Shroyer, Mary Yutzy, Pearl Arnold and Lillian Engle. Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Carl Franklin DeVore, whom she married June 6, 1935; one brother, Roy Yutzy, Cumberland, Md.; four sisters, Pauline McVicker, Bedford, Marian Budnowski, Albany, N.Y., Dorothy Papa, Hagerstown, Md., and Barbara Trupp, Foxboro, Ontario, Canada; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. DeVore had worked at the Celanese Corporation, Cumberland, immediately after graduating from high school. After moving to Hagerstown, she was employed in the filing department of Fairchild Aircraft where, in her own words, "[she] pulled orders to help build the 727 or the cargo plane." From 1955 until 1965, she was manager of the Terminal Liquor and Soda Fountain, Hagerstown, "where" she said, "everyday we made a different soup and sandwiches." She and her husband retired to his family home in Tiger Valley in 1966 where they did a little farming and restored Model A cars. She was an active member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Hyndman. She had been active in the Queen Esther Chapter #3 Order of Eastern Star, Hagerstown, and Oscar Jordan Post #7375 Auxiliary, Hyndman. She was a charter member of the Hagerstown Girl's Club, where she had served as president, and she was a member of the Board of Directors of the Girl's Club of America for two years. She was a charter member of the Bedford Elks Ladies Auxiliary #1707, and a member of the Fort Bedford Antique Car Club, Bedford. Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, on Tuesday, Oct. 17 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church for one hour immediately prior to funeral services. Funeral services will be conducted at the Christ Lutheran Church, Madley, PA 96, 6 miles north of Hyndman, on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David L. Wright officiating. Interment will be in the Madley-Yutzy Cemetery, Buffalo Mills.
