Bertha Workman, a resident at Miller's Merry Manor, turned 101 on August 24, 1983. Bertha has been a resident at Miller's since March of 1978. Bertha, before retiring worked as a Practical Nurse. Bertha enjoys reading, and we encourage her. She also likes to play Bingo. Bertha was served chicken for breakfast by the first shift. The aides said that Bertha frequently wants chicken for breakfast and being 101 doesn't come along everyday. She really enjoy it! Bertha's family came in with a beautiful birthday cake decorated by her daughter-in-law. It was a really great day for Bertha and the staff. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BERTHA! Contributed by Jerry Jackson of Park City, Utah August 24, 1984 A Happy 102 to You! Bertha Workman turned 102 years old Thursday with a birthday party at her Miller's Merry Manor residence. Bertha celebrated by blowing out a birthday candle and enjoying the day with friends. Born Aug. 24, 1882 near Loon Lake (she was 18 at the turn of the century), Bertha enjoyed a long career as a practical nurse in Columbia City. She and her husband Ira had one son, Donald, who is now deceased, and two grandchildren. Bertha has been a resident at Miller's Merry Manor for 12 years. Obituary contributed by Jerry Jackson of Park City, Utah 1985 Bertha Jackson Workman, 103, Member of Pioneer Family Bertha Jackson Workman, 103, died at 7:17 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Miller's Merry Manor in Columbia City. . . Mrs. Workman was born Aug. 24, 1882, in Thorncreek Township, one of 16 children born to one of Whitley County's pioneer families, John and Martha Long Jackson. She was married to J. Ira Workman on Dec. 22, 1903. Following her marriage she resided for several years in Fort Wayne, returned to Thorncreek Township due to her husband's illness. Following his death on Nov. 30, 1908, she lived at 354 N. Main St. in Columbia City and cared for her parents. In 1934 she moved to Muncie and when her health failed she took up residence at the local Miller's Merry Manor. She was a retired practical nurse and worked several years at Linvill Memorial Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Muncie. Surviving are a grandson, Theodore C. Workman of Las Vegas; three great-grandchildren, Ricky Meyer of Witt, Ill., Kimberly Workman and Shannon Workman, both of Las Vegas. Among local relatives are a nephew, Harold Jackson, and two nieces, Mrs. Elmer (Helen) Heinley and Mrs. Martha Hartman. Another niece, Betty Robbins lives in West Middleton. Several other nieces and nephews survive. A son, Donald, is deceased as are 10 brothers: Heber, Homer, Orton, Floyd, Jesse, Clarence, Vern, Daniel, John and Mahlon, and five sisters: Elizabeth, Edith, Daisy, Chloe and Clarissa. . .
