A letter from son Stephen’s wife Martha to their son William (postmark 1898?): “Your grandfather’s name was Benjamin Soar....Your father says he remembers his Father talking about his brothers one was William and another John he went to Australia and then one named Joseph he don’t remember about any more. Tomas Soar that belong to the ScottoGray [Scots Greys, regiment of the British Army] was your grandfather’s uncle[. Y]our grandfather had a pieceof an old sword his uncle had given him. I think Mr. Soar out in Iowa said his father’s name was Charles....P.S. Tomas Soar of the [Scots Greys] was at the battle of Waterloo. [The Scots Greys did fight at Waterloo 18 Jun 1815.] Mr. Ezra Soar out in Iowa [said] his grandfather’s name was George. This father had three brothers if he had any more I don’t know. Their names were William, Tomas, and James and his father had three sisters Arabella, Sabrina, and Lydia. I found his letter and above is what he says.” [It seems that she had had contact from a possible relation looking for a connection.]
