                 BASIL BAXTER
  Funeral services for Basil Baxter, 81, of Graceville, were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 1997 in Mount Olive Lutheran Church at Graceville.
 Rev. Dale Schliewe officated with Cindy Schliewe, organist, and Arlis Schmitz, soloist. Honorary pallbearers were all his many friends. Pallbearers were Ronnie and Ordell Ritter, Chuck Walters, Gary Cardwell, Edward Baxter and Greg Kleindl.
  Visitation was in the Larson Funeral Home at Graceville Sunday evening, and one hour prior to services at the church Monday. Interment was in the Graceville Consolidated Cemetery at Graceville.
  Basil "Bates" Baxter was born June 28, 1916 to Orin and Lillian (Darling) Baxter at Dawson, MN. He attended school in the Dawson area through the eighth grade. Bates grew up in the Dawson area until 1932 when he moved to the Graceville area with his parents.
  On December 8, 1945 he was united in marriage to Elida Olson in the Trinity Lutheran Church at Johnson. Basil worked for several people around the area as a farm helper. He did some logging in northern Minnesota for his wife's parents of Indus, MN. After this he moved back to the Johnson area to farm until his death on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997 at the Holy Trinity Hospital in Graceville, having reached the age of 81 years, three months and 11 days.
  Basil enjoyed farming and gardening. He will be remembered for having a cup of coffee ready for friends who stopped by for a visit.
  Survivors include one daughter, Evelyn Sandberg of Wilmar; one son, Milton (Julie) of Graceville; six grandchildren, Diane and Dan Sandberg, Michael, Jeffrey, Dustin and Crystal Baxter; one sister, Midred Christian of Montevideo; one brother, Gordon Baxter of Graceville; two sisters-in-law, Elois Bratten of Minnesota and Florence Baxter of Long Prairie.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, five brothers and five sisters.
