Facts and Events
Sandy Creek News, 27 Mar 1930: AUSTIN M. CAUFIELD Austin M. Caufield, aged 33, ... survives him, with three children, .. Roddy. Census 1930, Port ST, Town of Richland, Oswego County, NY: INDEXED AS CANFIELD Caufield, Dorothy - Head - " Austin - Son - Male - White - Age 10 - At school - Born New York " Roddy - Son - Male - White - Age 6 - At school - Born New York The 1930 Census is unexplainable. We have no idea who that *extra* child is. The correct birth order was Isabelle (b. 5/21/1920), Viantha (b. 2/9/1922) and Austin Roderick (b. 12/21/1923). He grew up being called Roddy, never even knew his name was really Austin until he got his birth certificate to go into the Marines. That extra child is apparently confusion on the part of the census taker. Since my Dad's name was really Austin but was called Roddy the census taker must have thought it was two separate children Census 1940, Pulaski, Oswego County, NY: Favret, Dorothy I. - Head - Caufield, Vianthia M. - Daughter - " Roddie A. - Son - Male - White - Age 16 - At school, 4th yr High - Born New York [edit] ==================================================================Oswego Palladium-Times, 9 Oct 1966: A. [edit] ==============================================E-mail from Julie (Caufield) Hanscombe: My father was born and raised in Pulaski, New York, in Oswego County. He left to join the Marines and met my mother in California when his ship was in San Diego for repairs. My mother was from Minnesota, but living with an aunt and uncle in California (to escape the farm in Minnesota!). She met my Dad at a roller skating rink one afternoon, they were married six weeks later. He shipped her to NY to live in his hometown until he got back from duty. My grandmother (Dorothy) was less than thrilled that my Dad had met and married my Mom, she apparently had a hometown girl all picked out for him to marry. He'd not followed the game plan! There were other issues too I suppose, but my Mom and Dorothy were never particularly close, as a result I know almost nothing about her or her siblings or the Durgee family. What a loss. Anyway...my folks moved around a little bit after Dad got out of the service, they lived in Minnesota for awhile and my oldest brother was born there. Then they moved back to Pulaski and the next two kids were born there. Dad always worked construction and was gone from home during the week and came home weekends so my Mom basically functioned like a single parent during the week. When Dad's boss got the contract to help build the St. Lawrence Seaway project and he knew it would be a long term project he moved the family to St. Lawrence county for the duration of the project. I was born in Massena during that time. After the project ended we moved back to Pulaski and Dad didn't want to be separated from the family anymore to work construction so he got a job working for the town of Pulaski and was home full-time. The last kid in the family was a born in 1963 after we were living in Pulaski again. Dad died in 1966 of a massive heart attack at the age of 42. He died on a Saturday morning. Ironic thing was he was scheduled to see a doctor on Monday for a *new* diagnosic test to check his heart (he'd had angina for years). I think the test was an angioplasty...routine now but not routine in 1966. We continued to live in Pulaski and I went through all grades of school there [edit] ========================================================================Watertown Daily Times (NY) - July 16, 2001 VIANTHA "MAMIE' KING RETIRED SALESCLERK Viantha "Mamie" Caufield King, 79, of 4051 Port St., died Saturday ...
