Facts and Events
Augustus Johnson Lewis was named for a popular politician in Rhode Island during the 1750s, Augustus Johnston. Unfortunately, in 1765 Augustus Johnston was appointed Stampmaster by the King. His popularity immediately ended. The mob hanged him in effigy. He was forced to resign. The king then appointed him a judge of the Vice-Admiralty Court in South Carolina. Augustus Johnson Lewis' mother died shortly before his second birthday. He was raised by his uncle Judge Joseph Hoxsie who gave him the Pasquisett Farm in Charlestown. Augustus Johnson Lewis lived to be 101 years old, dying as a pauper in Charlestown, in the home of his granddaughter, Arleville Co. (Browning) Larkin, wife of Reuben Larkin. References
