August Stephan, Former County Treasurer, Dies

Funeral Services Held This Morning At St. Mary's Church

  Funeral services were held at 9:30 o'clock this morning (Thursday) for August Stephan, Long Prairie pioneer and a former treasurer of Todd county for 26 continuous years. The services were held at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel church with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Rauch officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
  Mr. Stephan died at 10:50 o'clock Sunday evening of acute coronary thrombosis in Memorial hospital. He had been stricken only a few hours before and taken to the hospital.
  August Stephan was born Dec. 20, 1875, at Proskow, Upper Silesia, Germany, the son of Carl and Rosalia Stephan. At the age of five, in 1881, he moved to Long Prairie with his family. He had lived here ever since, a period of 76 years.
  He was educated in the Long Prairie public school and Verndale seminary. On Oct. 25, 1899, he married Idas Alfs. Mr. Stephan was elected to the office of Todd county treasurer in November of 1912. He served in that office continuously through 1938. He was a member of St. Mary's church and The Dutch club. He was an active worker in his favorite hobby of carpentry. He was a former member and charter member of the Long Prairie Knights of Columbus.
  He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. R.B. (Beatrice) Waller of Long Prairie and Mrs. R.C. (Irene) Dalsin of Minneapolis; three sons, Raymond of Sebastopol, Calif., Myron of Long Prairie and Claude of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; one brother, Carl of Long Prairie; 19 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
  Pallbearers were Frank Dinkel, Ardo Reichert, Everett Lux, Sr; Kenneth Sutton, BIll Knapp and Ferdinand Nokels.
