- Abt 1637 - came to the Eastern Shore of Virginia; may have indentured himself to Capt. William Stone
- 28 Oct 1651 - received 1st patent for transporting 6 persons
- 10 May 1652 - patented 300 acres at head of Occohannock Creek
- 11 Mar 1656 - received 2nd patent for 300 acres on Occohannock Creek for transporting 6 more people, one of whom was his future wife Mrs. Mary Risden
- married 1st Mrs. Mary (Hardwige) Risden
- 20 Oct 1661 - received 3rd patent for 100 acres on Occohannock Creek for transporting 2 more people
- relinquished Occohannock tracts and patented 2300 acres at Matchipungo on the seaside of Accomack County which became known as Upshur's Neck
- Abt 1662 - 1st wife Mary died
- married 2nd wife Mrs. Mary (Clarke) Hammond Jacob, thereby acquiring Cedar Grove plantation on Nassawadox Creek
- 30 Jun 1673 - tried and acquitted by Northampton County Court for murdering one of his servant women after evidence was produced that she died of scurvy
