carpenter and mailman Marblehead Messenger, Friday, 5 Feb. 1937 "Graves Rites- Services for Arthur Graves of 174 Pleasant street, retired letter carrier, were held at his home, Wednesday afternoon, with Rev. Thomas Mark of Hawes Memorial church, Boston, officiating. There were many floral offerings from the scores of friends and the relatives of the late postal employee. Represented at the funeral were I.O.O.F., post office employees and other societies. Burial was in Waterside Cemetery with commital prayesrs by Rev. "Fred Broughton Winds up 40 years of Postal Service; Arthur Graves, Another Veteran, Succumbs - Forty years of service as one of the town's first letter-carriers were wound up this week with the retirement from active postal work of Frederick A. Broughton who carried his first sack of mail in Marblehead July 22, 1897. Mr. Broughton's official retirement will take place at the close of business February 23, just one week after he will have reached his 63rd birthday. Affectionately known as "Freddie" to his host of friends in town, Mr. Broughton with Wallace D. Weed, who retired Oct 1, 1933, Arthur Graves, whose death saddened the post office this week, and whose retirement came after a few years of work due to ill health, and Cornelius Pierce, who is still working at the post office, were among the four original letter carriers in Marblehead. In his near half century of service, Mr. Broughton has seen the growth of the local postal service from the old post office which was in use when he first began to carry the mail to thepresent ornate quarters, recently erected in Marblehead. He has served under five different postmasters, Maskell Knowland, B.F. Martin, Frank W. Goodwin, John F. Williams and Fred W. Trasher. Marblehead Messenger 20 June 1890 " Contractor Arthur Graves has completed plans for a two story house to be built for Mr. Richard W. Reed on Pleasant Street, on the foundation of the house which was destroyed in the fire." Photo in posession of Robert G. Graves. Arthur Graves listed as sailmaker in the 1884-1885 Directory ( also 1888-89 directory) for Salem/ Marblehead etc. In 1890, listed as carpenter, and in 1891 listed as carpenter and builder.
Marblehead Messenger 8 Jan 1892 Extracted from a building report: "Mr. Arthur Graves reports the following: stable for J.C. Murray, extensions to factory for F.A. Parker & Co, house for Mrts. Matilda Baker, house for Mrs. Emma R. Sinclair,house for Edward N. Gleason, factory for Patrick O'Brien, summer cottage for Benj. V. Bessom, armory for the town of Marblehead, and innumerable small jobs." Marblehead Messenger 18 March 1892 "Mr. Arthur Graves has the contract to build a new house at Clifton for Mr. F.L. Godding to take the place of the one destroyed by fire recently. The house is to be more convenient and in all ways a better style summer home than the last one. The dimensions outside piazzas are about 40X50 Feet" Marblehead Messenger, 4 Nov 1894 "Mr. Arthur Graves has built a large hennery on the Graves land on Ferry Rd. It is 115 ft. long" Marblehead Messenger, 24 April 1896 "Messrs Arthur Graves and Frank S. Trefry, proprietors of the 'Ferry Poultry Yards' have been hatching chickens by incubator since January, and now have about six hundred chicks to care for."
