Childhood

Ann Bradshaw was born on 21st August 1827 at South Hylton in the township of Ford in the parish of Bishopwearmouth, County Durham. She was the younger of two daughters of Jane Bradshaw, formerly Watson, and her husband William Bradshaw, a potter. William died when Ann was only two years old.

When Ann was eight years old her mother married again, to a potter named John Cooper who thus became Ann's stepfather. Jane and John would have three children together, who were Ann's half-siblings. The 1841 census finds Ann living with her mother, step-father and half-siblings at South Hylton.

Marriage to Robert Westmorland

In 1848, when she was about 21, Ann married a joiner named Robert Westmorland, who was about four years older than her. He was originally from the Streatlam area, a few miles to the south-west of South Hylton, but they settled in South Hylton, appearing there in the 1851 census living at Ford Terrace.

In 1851, Ann had a son named Joseph William (apparently named after both her father and Robert's), but sadly young Joseph William died as a baby when he was only one month old. Just over a year later, Ann had twin girls, Isabella and Jane Ann (apparently named after both her mother and Robert's). Baby Isabella died when only one month old, whilst Jane lived to be three years old, but died in 1856. Therefore, by 1856 Ann had had three children, but seen all of them die young. She and Robert did not have any more children.

The 1861 census finds Ann visiting her half-sister Jane Hutchinson (formerly Cooper), who was living in the nearby town of Sunderland. Robert was away from the area on census night, lodging at Sheerness in Kent. It is the nature of the censuses that we do not know whether he was simply away for a night or two or a longer period. Either way, he later returned to South Hylton.

Ann's mother Jane Cooper died in 1864.

Ann and her half-sister Jane Hutchinson appear to have been close: in January 1869 Jane had a daughter whom she named Isabella Westmorland Hutchinson, after one of Ann's short-lived twins.

Robert died on 4th June 1869 at South Hylton, aged 45. They had been married for twenty years. Ann administered his estate after his death, which was valued at less than £50.

The 1871 census finds Ann living alone at Wear Street in South Hylton, working as a grocer.

Marriage to William Drummond

In 1874, aged 46, Ann married again. Her second husband was an engine man named William Drummond, who was about 45 when they married, but was still a bachelor. William was from Penshaw, a few miles away, but moved in with her at Wear Street in South Hylton and joined her in the business, becoming a grocer and draper before the 1881 census. By the time of the 1891 census he had reverted to being an engine man, and Ann and William had moved to 25 John Street, a three-roomed house.

William died in 1898, aged 68. Ann and William had been married for 23 years.

The 1901 census finds Ann living alone again, still at 25 John Street in South Hylton. By the time of the 1911 census she had moved in with her half-sister Jane, who was also now a widow. They were living in two rooms at 8 Dawson Terrace in South Hylton, along with one of Jane's son Watson (whose first name was Ann and Jane's mother's maiden surname).

Ann died in 1912. She was 84 years old.
