William Drummond was baptised on 25th March 1829 at Penshaw in the parish of Houghton le Spring, County Durham. He was the son of a bookseller named Thomas Drummond and his wife Jane. William appears in each census from 1841 to 1871 living with his parents at Penshaw, where they appear to have lived in the New Penshaw part of the village. William worked as an engine fireman.

William did not marry until he was about 45 years old. His wife was a widow named Ann Westmorland, formerly Bradshaw. Although she had had three children with her first husband, all three had died before she married William. Ann was a year or two older than William. They do not appear to have had any children together.

Ann was from the village of South Hylton near Sunderland. After her first husband's death she had been working as a grocer and living on Wear Street in South Hylton. William moved in with his new wife at South Hylton and joined her business - the 1881 census finds them both living at 1 Wear Street, with William now a grocer and draper. By 1891 he had reverted to his previous trade as an engineman.

William died in 1898, aged 68. Ann outlived him by about fourteen years.
