Joseph's birth certificate would be necessary to confirm that he was Robert and Ann's son. However, Ann reported in the 1911 census that she had had three children, all of whom had died. The family lived at South Hylton and there are only three Westmorland burials there - all children in the 1850s. Joseph was also Robert's father's name. In no census did Ann or Robert have any children living with them, suggesting none of the three children lived very long. It therefore seems highly likely that Joseph was Robert and Ann's son.
