Andrew BUCHANAN was b. 1690 and d. 1759 (Burke's landed gentry, 2001). Andrew was maybe b. 29jan1691 (Provosts of Glasgow, 1942). Andrew was a Virginia merchant, Dean of Guild, 1728-29, provost of Glasgow 1740-41 (Old Glasgow Exhibition), and one of the founders of the Ship Bank (Provosts of Glasgow). Marion was called Jane in Paterson’s History of Cty of Ayr (Provosts of Glasgow). Jane Montgomerie (b. 11dec1711), daughter of James Montgomerie (d. 1734) of Pearston and Thirdpart (at Skelmolie, Largs, Ayrshire) and Mary Simpson, and sister of Patrick Montgomerie of Boutriehill (b. 1701), married Andrew Buchanan of Drumpellier (Genealogical history of the family of Montgomery, by T.H. Montgomery, 1863). Andrew Buchanan, merchant, late Provost of Glasgow, d. there 28dec1759 (Public Advertiser). Andrew d. 1759 and was bur in Ramshorn churchyard (Provosts of Glasgow). A portrait of Andrew Buchanan of Drumpellier (1691-1759) was lent to Old Glasgow Exhibition by Sir David Carrick-Buchanan, KCB, of Drumpellier. Andrew married (1) Marion (b. 11dec1711, bur 31may1743), daughter of James Montgomery of Pearston and Thirdpart, who had 2 sons and 4 or 5 daughters; Andrew married (2) Elizabeth Binning (d. 6nov1782, Edinburgh), who had no children (Provosts of Glasgow).

F Elizabeth BUCHANAN was b. maybe 1732 and d. dec1802, aged 70, at Miller St. (Glasgow Courier, Provosts of Glasgow). Elizabeth married William FRENCH, provost, in 1774 (Provosts of Glasgow). Elizabeth, daughter of decd Andrew Buchanan of Drumpellier, married William French, merchant and magistrate, 25feb1774 at Glasgow (General Evening Post, Latter day saints). William French was b. 25sep1733, eldest son of James French and Eupham, daughter of Andrew Scott, both merchant burgesses of Glasgow, and was admitted burgess by right of his father, 25nov1755, William 1st married Janet MacKenzie; William d. 17feb1802 (Provosts of Galsgow). Scottish archives have the will of Elizabeth Buchanan, spouse of William French, merchant, Glasgow, and daughter of Andrew Buchanan of Drumpeller, merchant, Glasgow provost, reg. 1805 (scotlandspeople).

Andrew had a brother, Archibald BUCHANAN, who d. 1760. Archibald Buchanan of Auchentorlie married Martha MURDOCH, daughter of Provost Peter Murdoch and Mary Luke of Claythorn. Archibald was chr 20jul1701 at Glasgow (Vital Records) and married Martha Murdock 4dec1728 at Glasgow (IGI). Archibald of Aucnintorlie, Dunbartonshire, and Hillington, Renfrewshire (Buchanan Book). Archibald and Martha had the following children: F Mary BUCHANAN. Mary married Alexander SPEIRS (1714-10dec1782). Mary married Alexr Spiers 2mar1755 at Glasgow (IGI). Alexander of Elderslie was a Virginia merchant, Treasurer of the City, 1755, and Bailie, 1757 and 1762 (Old Glasgow Exhibition). Elderslie is in Renfrewshire. In 1770 he bought the “Virginia mansion” from the trustees of George Buchanan of Mt Vernon (Old Glasgow). Alexander was son of John Speirs, Edinburgh merchant, and Isobel, daughter of Provost John Tweedie of Peebles (“Popular traditions of Glasgow” by Andrew Wallace). Alexander Speirs married (1) Sarah Carey and (2) Mary, daughter of Archibald Buchanan (Old Glasgow). Portraits of Alexander Speirs (1714-10dec1782) and Mary Buchanan (b. 173-, d. 1818) were lent to Old Glasgow Exhibition and reproduced in the catalogue. M Andrew BUCHANAN.
