Research Notes

Birth: Ally's headstone shows a birth year of 1803. However, because she was married and her first child was born in 1814, it seems unlikely that she was born that late. The 1830 Census shows her as having been born prior to 1800; the 1850 Census indicates by her age that she was born in 1800; and the 1870 Census indicates by her age that she was born in 1798. So we have reason to believe she was born before 1800. Her cemetery headstone was apparently placed at some point after her passing, so could have been inscribed with the wrong year of birth.
Death: The 1870 Census is the last census Ally appears in. Her (2nd) headstone says that she passed in 1898, but the headstone was apparently placed at some point after her passing. Given that we have reason to believe she was born before 1800, it seems unlikely that she lived until 1898; more likely that her death occurred in 1878 and the date was interpreted to be 1898 when the 2nd headstone was created. Regardless, there is no 1880 Census with her on it.'
When Jonas Letterman and wife Alphedus Hughes came to Webster Co, Missouri from North Carolina they bought land April 10, 1843. This is on record book 1, page 126, also book 76, page 227. This land is known as the Jimmie Smiths farm on Interstate Highway 44 below the Northview overpass weat of Marshfield. Copy of marriage bonn, show Letterman spelled "Lethermon" and wife's name spelled "Alfeda". This bonn was signed by Jonas Lethermon and John Hughs on 9 April 1814.
