Declaration for Original Invalid Pension Dated May 11, 1878 at Webster Co ., Missouri
States that Isreal Letterman aged 46 years enrolled on the 2 day of August 1862 in Company I, 8th Regiment of Volunteer Missouri Cavalry commanded by Capt. Foster J. McAdoo and was honorably discharged at St. Louis on the 21st day of June 1865.
His personal description on that date was age: 33 years, height: 5 ft 10 Inches, complexion: Dark: Dark Hair: Eyes: blue.
In the line of duty near Austin, Arkansas on or about the 20th day of Dec 1864, he was thrown from a horse, causing injury to his side and his spine. Israel was treated in the hospital at Little Rock, AR in Dec 1864 and in St. Louis, Mo. in April 1865.
Since leaving the service, he had resided in the counties of Dallas and Webster, State of Missouri and his occupation has been that of a farmer, when able. His post office address was Niangua, Webster County, Missouri.
This Deceleration was signed by Israel Letterman's M (X) and witnessed by Jacob Desterow and J.H. Cunningham. War Department, Adjutant General's Office Receipt of application for pension No. 255250 Israel Letterman dated Aug 10, 1878. :::This document states that Israel Letterman was enrolled on the 2nd day of Aug, 1862 at Buffalo, MO. on Co. I 8th Regiment Mo. Cavalry Volunteers serve 3 years or during the war.
Mustered into service as a private on the 12th day of September 1862 at Springfield, Mo. Muster rolls of Co. I of that regiment show the following about him: Oct 31,1862 absent on detached service.
Nov and Dec 1862 present and so reported to June 30, 1864. July and August 1864 absent on scout since Aug 27, 1864. Sept and Oct 1864 present.
Nov and Dec 1864 sick at Lewisburg, Arkansas since Dec 10, 1864, Jan and Feb 1865 present.
Mar and Apr 1865 in Gen Hospital Little Rock, Arkansas Mar 1, 1865. May and June 1865 same.
Mustered out June 21, 1865 at St Louis. Further states that the records of that office were furnished no evidence of injury Dec, 1864. Signed by C.H. Benjamin, Assistant Adjudge General.[1]

Stone inscription: 8th Mo Ca:: Israel's grave is located 1 1/2 miles South of Conway, Missouri across Panther Creek Bridge about 200 feet further up hill left of wooded area about 1/4 mile; a single grave which is fenced.:: Grandchildren to Israel: Effie Letterman Alexander and James Letterman placed the military grave marker and fence around the grave. In 1979 the farm was owned by Jack Shockley.[1]
