Facts and Events
Often known as Robert. From a Newspaper cutting, possibly from the Weekly Times, Mr Robert Gillett, Shelford writes: "As an old reader of your valuable paper, and reading some of your shearing tallies, I thought I would give you some of my shearing experiences. The first sheep I sheared was at Warrambeen in 1865. I went there picking up at 10/- a week for 10 shearers for two seasons. I was no "ringer". A few over the 100 per day. I have shorn sheep ever since, shearing 44 in one day this season. I am in my 81st year. I went to Murray Downs Station in 1878, and a very rough trip it was - eight days on the road and five wet ones. Horse took bad by over-feeding, and had to walk the last forty miles. I sheared over 5000 sheep in Victoria one year, starting at Wurruck in October and went to French and Phillip Islands, and home a week before Christmas." |
