The infirmities of age were increased in my Grandfathers case by West India peculiarities. He would remain in bed when the weather was stormy although in his usual health. When his housekeeper would come in to the room in the morning he would say, "Polly, what kind of weather is it?" She would say, "Snowing." "Ah, well, bring me my breakfast. I shall not get up to-day." He always used 4 different kinds of sheets during the year. In winter fine soft gauze flannel. In the spring muslin, fall heavy linen and in the summer the finest Irish linens which could be procured. He dressed in summer in suits of heavy silk coats and breeches and I well recollect my mother cutting up remarkably heavy apple green and plum colored suits to make us children bags. Mama always spoke of him as being a remarkably handsome man with a commanding presence and a stentorious voice. He always carried a gold headed cane and when excited and angry would pound it down on the floor to the terror of his children and dependents. He was an honorable and high minded man but his early life had made him exacting and overbearing and as age came on avarice the accompanyment for several years with internal affections and at last died more than 80 years of age of a carbuncle between his eyes and he is buried with his wife and several young children in the burial ground belonging to Christ Church at the corner of 5th and Arch streets. My mother always lamented that he was unwilling to have his portrait painted. There were no photographers in his day and besides weariness which sitting for his picture would have caused him, he always fancied that with his immediate descendants all interest in him would pass away and he would detail many anecdotes of the pictures of his ancestors whom he had seen consigned to the garret...
Abraham then returned to St. Croix where he shortly after married his cousin of the same name, his father having settled the estate of Parasol upon him. This estate was in the neighborhood of Crequi garden where doubtless our Huguenot ancestors ate bananas and feasted on alligator pears [avocado, JS] thankful that they had, although with the loss of earthly honors, escaped the tender mercies of Louis XIV and the honors of the Dragonnades
