Facts and Events
Name Isaac Markoe
Gender Male

I have said that my grandfather left two sons. Isaac the eldest was an exceeding amiable and attractive man; like his mother he was gentle and easily imposed upon. He studied medicine but before completing the study his father felt uneasy about some matters connected with his West India property and proposed that his son Isaac should go out and attend to matters. He went as directed and when the business was settled left the Island in the "City of Sant Domingo" packet which never reached the American coast. After 6 weeks had passed my grandfather told his son and daughter to purchase mourning for he knew that they would never see their brother again. They afterwards heard that the vessel was not seaworthy and not fit to encounter our coast, but it was then too late and all his friends could do was to grieve over his untimely fate. My mother never could speak of him without tears. He had been a most affectionate brother to her. (See The "Lost" Markoes for a fantastic theory of Isaac's death). - Reminiscences of Mary Hazlehurst Ashhurst (1806-1890)
