Biography

Abigail Hoyt was born about 1721[1][2] to Joseph and Hannah (Chase) Hoyt,[2] presumably in Stratham, New Hampshire. Her surname was also spelled as "Hoit" by members of the New Hampshire branch of the family, notably in the family of her brother Joseph Hoit II. Abigail married David Pickard, son of Moses and Lydia (Platts) Pickard of Rowley, Massachusetts. Although when and where they married has not been determined, it was certainly before her father executed his last will on 5 May 1748, in which the scribe spelled her name as Abigail Picart. David and Abigail left few extant records during David's lifetime, and if someone didn't happen to stumble upon her real estate activity after David's death with an understanding of the identity of Hannah (Hoit) Pearson (her niece), she would be exceedingly difficult to trace. David and Abigail may have married and lived in New Hampshire for some time, but records yet found are silent until 14 March 1756, when David Pickard & Abigail his wife were admitted in full communion with the First Church of Rowley.[3] David Pickard is next found in 1757 on Capt. Northend's alarm list for the town.[4] David and Abigail do not seem to have had any children, although circumstantial evidence suggests they may have taken in Abigail's niece Hannah Hoit after her mother, Sarah (Jewett) Hoit, died in 1759 (see below). If Hannah did live with Abigail and David, she would have been surrounded by members of her Jewett family (also see below). (Hannah married Daniel Pearson of Newburyport around 1776. She named her first daughter after her mother, Sarah. She named second daughter "Abigail Pickard Pearson" in 1779.) David died in April 1776,[5] leaving his entire estate to Abigail, whom he named as sole executrix. She was granted letters of administration on 7 May 1776, with sureties Joseph and Jacob Jewett.[6] David's estate consisted of multiple parcels of land, to which Abigail added yet one more in 1791, and then, starting in 1795, she began to sell them. In 1797, she seems to have consolidated her finances and household with her niece Hannah (Hoit) Pearson, who herself was recently widowed, and the two women, apparently living together in Hannah's house Newburyport, shared the project of disposing of the remaining parcels, including David and Abigail's house and home lot. Effectively, Abigail seems to have made Hannah her sole beneficiary while avoiding the probate process.

Also, seven other pieces of land in Rowley beq. to me by him, together all the real estate beq. to me by him, except two pieces, one I sold to Rebuen Howe and George Howe and the other to Bradstreet Plummer -- reserving to myself to improve premises during my natural life. Wits. Nathaniel Barker, Joseph Torrey (almost certainly Torrey but perhaps Tenney).[12] After technically selling all of her land and her house to Hannah, it appears Abigail dwelled with her in Newburyport. The household of widow Hannah Pearson appears in 1800 census of Newburyport, with a girl aged 10-16, a woman aged 26-45 and a woman over 45. In reverse order, these were probably Abigail Pickard, Hannah Pearson and her youngest daughter, also named Hannah.[13]

Wits. John Hobson, Thomas Mighill.[15] 18 March 1800: Abigail Pickard and Hannah Pearson, widows both of Newburyport, to Samuel Hobson of Rowley, cordwainer, $50, 1/4 a. in the First Parish of Rowley at s.e. cor. of the homestead formerly owned by David Pickard late of Rowley dec., b. the road 5r. to Amos Dunnel, n. by Dunnel 8r., w. by our own land 5r., s. by our own land 8r. Wits. Nicl. Pike, Ann Moulton.[16]

Abigail died on 9 September 1802, age 81. She probably died in Newburyport, though her death was recorded in Rowley.[1] Hannah continued to sell the remaining lots through 1803. See Hannah's profile.
