Notes

Ship Arrival

The following notes deal with the arrival of the Hayes and Taylor families in Philadlephia in 1682 and 1683. There are three different ship arrivals

1682 The Concord
Nov. 1683, Robert Crossman, master, from Liverpool (no ship name given)
Oct 1683 the Endeavor

The passengers on these three voyages seem to be related to the family of Robert Taylor and Jonathan Hayes, but there are a number of points where the data conflict with each other.

From: Chester County Genealogy Project See also: TexasDar which identifies the ship as The Friendship

November, 1683, Robert Crossman, master, from Liverpool

George and Isabella Gleave, servants to Hough, and their son George
Jonathan Hayes, wife Ann Williamson, and children Jonathan, Mary and Elizabeth
John Hough, wife Hannah and son John

Robert emigrated first, travelling with a servant, Daniel WILLIAMSON. They sailed on the Concord, leaving Liverpool in 1682.
Mary Taylor "late of Clatterwitch in Cheshire" and her children, "Isaack, Tho:, Jona:, Phebe, Mary, Martha" arrived in Philadelphia on Seventh Month 29, 1683 [29 October 1683 Old Style] on board the ketch Endeavour of London.

Mary's brother Jonathan HAYES went with them.[12]

Robert Taylor (1633-1688)

Name Robert Taylor

Birth 7 December 1633 Little Leigh, Cheshire, England
Christening 15 December 1633 Little Leigh, Cheshire, England
Death 13 January 1688 Springfield Township, Chester, Pennsylvania
Religious Affiliation Quaker

This looks very much as though its related to the ship list given first, which lacks the name of the ship. Note that

Robert Taylors servant is Daniel Williamson, and Johnathan's wife if Ann Williamson.
The second note (below) has Jonathan's sister as Jonathan Hayes, but there's no Mary Hayes, or Mary Taylor, listed in the ship list, except where it shows as Jonathan's daughter Mary.

ID: I1426 Name: Mary Hayes Sex: F Birth: BEF 1643 in Little Leigh, Cheshire, England Religion: Quaker Death: 11 APR 1728 in Springfield, Chester County, Pennsylvania Note: Mary was apparently his 2nd wife, and so may not have been the mother of all his children, though it appears likely that daughter Martha at least was from this 2nd marriage.

Robert Taylor's wife and children arrived July 29, 1683 on the ship "Endeavor." The ship's list shows: Mary Taylor, late of Clatterwich, Cheshire, Isaac Taylor, Thomas Taylor, Jonathan, Taylor, Phebe Taylor, Mary Taylor, Martha Taylor. Rachel and Josiah doubtless accompanied their father the previous year and the youngest child, Jacob was born in Pennsylvania (all of the children are recorded in Friends' Register of Cheshire, England, except Jacob). On the same ship was a Daniel Williamson, servant to Robert Taylor and brother of Mary Williamson Howell.

Mary died intestate. An LDS entry apparently shows her death as Feb 11, 1728 (rather than April): this seems to have caused some confusion among secondary sources.

A Jonathan arrived to Chester County in 1683 aboard the Friendship, w/ wife, Ann, and children, Jonathan, Mary and Elizabeth. Jonathan died ca 1715 in Chester County, PA, and his son,Jonathan died in 1719. Both are candidates for the father of Sarah Hayes, wife of Thomas Powell. But most likely, if I am on target (I hope), Jonathan Jr will be the more likely "suspect".
