The will of Samuel Houston son of Christopher Huston was filed by Henry and Esther Glesford. Esther is presumed to be Samuel's wife, who has remarried by the time the will enters probate (1740). Henry and Esther eventually sell a parcel of property on the Brandywine to James Houston. The wife of this James Huston who settled on the Brandywine is sometimes identified as Mary Grasford. In 1758 a Margaret Lightfoot leaves a bequest to James son of James of the Brandywine. This suggests that she is related in someway to the Houston's, and also shows a) that the first James who settled on the James is dead by 1758, and records from around this date for a James Houston on the Brandywine probably represent his son. In anycase, the Gradford connection between Samuel's wife, and James Houston of the Brandywine be it father or son) Seems to suggest that there is a connection between Samuel and James. Christopher does not mention a son James (he does mention a grandson), it is possible that the elder James of the Brandywine was already dead by 1726 when Christopher made his will. In this interpretation the bequests that Christopher made to two grandsons (Christopher and James) is in lieu of an already deceased son (James the elder).
