Alexander Ewing boarded a ship bound for America in 1727, along with

his wife, Rebeckah, and those of his children already born. The

Alexander Ewing family was accompanied on this same ship by his

cousin Nathaniel, son of Robert Ewing's brother William. Nathaniel's half-

brothers and their families were also aboard. Nathaniel brought his wife

Rachel and their eight children (one of whom, Ann, was born on

shipboard) on this arduous journey. Settling first in Cecil County, MD,

these two families remained closely tied. Alexander became a plantation

holder in Cecil County and never left, dying there May 7, 1738. His

widow is said by some to have moved to Montgomery County, VA, and

later died there, although there is no documentation of this other than

anecdotal and Rebeckah was still in Cecil County in 1750. Alexander's

children, certainly his sons, moved on with a group of Ewing cousins to

settle in Prince Edward County, VA. Later, they went into Wythe County

to the Cripple Creek area, and John as well as Samuel and William,

finally settled in Montgomery County. Alexander's success in MD

established a tradition of further good fortune as each of his children

continued to acquire lands and establish plantations. Alexander's Will

illustrated his ability to provide for his family a future in their new

homeland, although it does not specify the extent of his holdings.

GEORGE WYTHE EWING.

A retired newspaper man of Lewisburg is George W. Ewing, who was

born in Marshall county, on the 7th of October, 1850, a son of James

Scott and Elza (Bivins) Ewing. The father was of Scotch-Irish descent

and the mother of English descent. The paternal great-great-great-

grandfather, Samuel Ewing, received a grant of land in Virginia from

King George II of England and located in this country in the early pioneer

days, being one of the influential men of his day. His son, George Ewin

had a son, Samuel Ewing, who was the father of William Ewing, the

grandfather of George W. whose name introduces this review. William

Ewing was born in Georgia and came to Tennessee, locating in Marshall

county in 1810. He was a mechanic by profession and manufactured

spinning wheels, looms, etc., for some time. Later he engaged in the

mercantile business near Lewisburg and conducted both enterprises until

the outbreak of the Civil war. He was a large landowner in this county

and a man of much prominence in the community. His wife was Rebecca

Ewing. The maternal grandfather,

      2. Nathaniel Ewing {80} was born about 1693 in Ulster, Ireland. He was the son of William Ewing {78} and his first wife. Nathaniel died 6 Sep 1748 in Cecil County, Maryland. He married

Speer, Appendix 6.

Close Rachel Porter {3743} 2 Mar 1721/1722 in Ulster, Ireland. She was born 1706 in Ulster, Ireland, and was christened 5 Jul 1711 in the Burt Presbyterian congregation in Ulster, Ireland. She was the daughter of Josiah Porter {3741} and Margaret Ewing {76}. Rachel died 30 Dec 1771 most likely in Cecil County, Maryland. They had lived in Octoraro Hundred, presently (1998) known as 8th Election District, Cecil County, Maryland just north of Porter’s Bridge. Nathaniel died intestate and his intestate record can be found in Cecil County, Maryland Book 2 page 230. That record gives the ages of his children. Therefore, it is possible to estimate the year the children were born.

The IGI file for Ireland as of Mar 1988, page 8,611, shows a marriage on 2 March 1721/22 for Nathaniel Ewing and Rachel Porter, Londonderry, Londonderry, Templemore. This would indicate an Episcopal wedding. Also, would this indicate that Nathaniel and Rachel lived reasonably close to Londonderry at the time they got married?
