The ... 150 acres that Abner Sold to Ellswick Scifers in 1835 appears to be the same land that was sold to Harvey Cifers in 1847. Ellswick was the son of Andrew Cifers and the brother of Harvey. When Ellswick died, his land went to his father. It identifies the land as being located on Cove Creek. Quick edit: The land purchased by Harvey, brother to Ellswick deceased, was purchased in 1847 from his father Andrew Ciphers.

In Witness Whereof the said parties of the first part have hereunto subscribed their names and affixed their seals the day and year first above written. Jonathan J. Jordan - Elizabeth Jordan Archibald T. Brooks - Eleanor Jane Brooks Gideon Cifers - Mary Cifers Richard Brooks - Mary Brooks Samuel Brooks - Malinda Brooks Andrew Cifers Some wrong spellings in the deed - Micey must be Mary; Mellender must be Malinda, and lots of ways to spell Seifers. [This shows] ...that Gideon was son of Andrew. Andrew's wife was named Mary, according to other deed records. - Isham Linder

Cove Creek, waters of Beaver Creek, was on the Russell-Washington Cos, VA line and just northwest of Shelby's Fort. Also on Cove Creek were the Anthony & and Mary HEAD, Sr. family, the latter having married Isaac BAKER, Sr. following the death of Anthony:

Note from Teressa: I believe the “Cove Creek” mentioned in the above deeds are Locust Cove Creek. The above map [not shown here, copy right issues; will insert a replacement] shows Cove Creek as bordering the Russell, Scott and Washington County lines. The Cove Creek [sales] involving Abner, Andrew, Ellswick and Harvey are listed in Smyth County. Cove Creek in Washington County does not run off of the North Fork of the Holstein. Locust Cove Creek does and Pine Mountain is North of the North Fork of the Holstein, with the river running along the foot of it. Saltville, Allison’s Gap area.

In the 1815 Directory of Va. Landowners, Abner is listed in Washington County as having land on the South Side of Pine Mountain and the north Fork of the Holstein River; 20 NE.

Abner sells to Elswick Ciphers in 1838, Smyth now a County, and it states 150 acres.

The 1815 Directory of Landowners also shows Andrew Saifors, of Wythe County, Rich Valley- 24NE, Cove Creek on the North side of North Fork of the Holstein River 33NE.

Also listed is a John Saffer, Cove Creek.

It’s all in the same area.

Part of the index to the recorded copies of grants issued by the Virginia Land Office. The collection is housed in the Archives at the Library of Virginia.
Subject - Personal Willes, Abner. grantee.

We are certain that this is the record you seek. Although the Grant was not issued until 1812, the treasury warrant giving him the right to survey the land was dated 14 June 1783. This information is stated within the Grant itself. A free digital image of the Grant can be viewed by clicking on the URL link above. We cannot explain why Abner Willes waited nearly twenty years to have the land surveyed before submitting it to be recorded in the Land Office.

By the way, please don't be confused by the term Grant. This was not land freely given to Willes, but rather it was vacant land purchased by the grantee from the Land Office. The term Grant simply refers to the document by which unappropriated land was conveyed by the state government to an individual after October 1779. It replaced the term Patent used for the same transaction conducted prior to 1774. Hope this helps with your research.
