Dettingen Parish, Prince William Virginia
Year range
1745 - 1799

Dettingen Parish was carved out of Hamilton Parish in 1745. The following list would necessarily be only a portion of the freeholders as some may not have signed the petition. Never-the-less, this is a fairly inclusive list. If you are posting family information about any of these folks, please make their name a link to their family.

PETITION TO SELL DETTINGEN PARISH GLEBE 1799
PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VIRGINIA

December 17, 1799. A petition of freeholders and other inhabitants of Prince William county petition the House of Delegates to sell Dettingen Parish Glebe to invest the proceeds and use the income from same to educate poor children whose parents or guardians are unable to pay for their tuition. The petition shows that some time in the year 1798, the reverend Spence Grayson, the then minister of Dettingen Parish in Prince William County, died and the said parish became vacant. The Glebe was rented by the Rev. Spence Grayson to John McMillian, Esq. at a stipulated price and after the death of said minister Mr. McMillian continues to occupy the glebe lands in 1799. The petitioners request that a committee be appointed to sell the glebe and collect from John McMillian, esq. the same rent in either money or tobacco that he had previously paid to the parish minister.
