Background

The following tables summarize information for Houston's in Mayhill's Deed Abstracts. The data of interest are related to deed records. However, Mayhill also included a set of Oaths of Allegiance during the Revolution, and these have been included as well. These data were located using Mayhill's index, which included other spelling variations listed "Houston". Data extraction is largely incomplete, at least for the Deeds. The Oaths simply list persons taking the oaths on a specific date (usually in the summer of 1778). One might obtain some idea of neighbors and friends of these people by looking at the lists given in Mayhill for the specific entry. For the deed abstracts, the information shown here is typically only a relevance summary. If relevant personal information is provided in the deed this is given more completely, but if the relevance is only that a particular person served as a witness for a land transcaction, information extraction from Mayhill's abstracts is more limited.

Deed Abstracts

Almost all of the references in Mayhill, 1973, for "Houston's" seem to be related to a John Houston. These may refer to different John Houston's, but for the most part, they seem to be related to the John Houston and wife Martha who settled near the Gap in Salisbury/Sadsbury/Leacock TP. Other Houstons listed in the index are only mentioned in the Revolutionary War Oaths of Allegiance as given by Mayhill. T
