Family History

On 18 August 1840, Thomas Overton of Tadcaster, brick maker and son of William Overton, wheelwright, and Elizabeth Fowler of the same place, daughter of Richard Fowler, coachman, were married by minister W.C. Bellhouse in the parish church of St Mary, Tadcaster, Yorkshire. Their ages were stated to be 29 and 24 respectively. The marriage was witnessed by (probably Elizabeth's brother and his future wife) Richard Fowler and Jane Bateman.[1][6]

In 1841, in Southrow, Bardney parish, Lincolnshire, Thomas (occ. brick maker) and Elizabeth were enumerated in the U.K. census.[2]

By the 1851 U.K. census, the family had moved to the village of Newbiggin (in the chapelry of Newbiggin), Northumberland, where Thomas (occ. tile and brick maker), his wife Elizabeth, and his children Ann, Sarah, William, Frances, and Elizabeth were enumerated.[3] The places of birth of the children were stated to be Bardney, in Lincolnshire, and Hebburn, Felton, and Bothal, in Northumberland.

By the 1861 U.K. census, the family had moved to Choppington in the parish of Bedlington, where Thomas (occ. brick and tile maker), his wife Elizabeth, and his children Ann, Sarah, Jane, William, Frances, Elizabeth, Thomas, and Richard were enumerated.[4]

In 1871, in the hamlet of Scotland Gate, Bedlington parish, Thomas (occ. brick and tile maker), his wife Elizabeth, his children Sarah, Jane, and Thomas (occ. brick maker), and his granddaughter Emily Frances were enumerated in the U.K. census.[5] Emily was the daughter of Sarah who was unmarried.
