Joan may have been an illegitimate daughter of Richard (as could be inferred from The Peerage^[1]). Cawley (Medieval Lands) does not list her as a daughter of this Richard (whom he places in Northamptonshire, not Kent, where Joan's husband was), so it is possible that she was not a daughter of this Richard at all.
