From the Memorial of John Slafter S1:

Of his wife we find no record whatever. The date of the birth of his children, with the exception of Mary and Samuel, is conjectural, and whether they are arranged in the order of birth in the following list, is uncertain. That he had ten children is evident from the fact, that his son Benjamin left in his will, the residue of his property, after the decease of his wife, to his "nine brothers and sisters," or their heirs. The names of nine of the ten children, with some historical notice, are contained in this memorial. The tenth child may have had no family, and have left no record. There are, however, many circumstances which point to James Shafter [sic], the ancestor of the Hon. Judge Shafter, of California, as the tenth child, but the evidence is not absolute, and his genealogy is not contained in the body of this work. [It is, however, detailed in an appendix, along with the circumstancial evidence suggesting the link.]
The children of John Slafter were as follows. The place of their birth was probably Lynn, Mass.:--
  • Mary, b. Nov., 1688; d. Jan 12, 1793; m. Isaac Wellman.
  • Anthony, b. perhaps about 1690; d. June 28, 1723; m. Mary Eaton.
  • Elizabeth, b. perhaps about 1693; d. probably about 1734; m. Thomas Hutchinson.
  • Samuel, b. Aug., 1696; d. July 31, 1770; m. Dorothy Fenton.
  • Joseph, b. perhaps about 1698; d. about 1787; m. Esther ----.
  • Sarah, b. perhaps about 1700; m. Samuel Paulk.
  • Moses, b. perhaps about 1702; d. about 1778; m. Jemima Scripture.
  • Abigail, b. perhaps about 1704; d. March 15, 1738; m. Dea. George Sawin.
  • Benjamin, b. perhaps about 1706; d. about 1760; m. Bethia Eaton.

Disambiguation

This John Slafter is often conflated with John Slaughter, who lived in Simsbury, CT, who married Abiah (Gillet) Barrett in 1669, and who had six children between 1669 and 1682. John Slaughter of Simsbury died in 1713, and his wife Abiah died in 1716, while this John Slafter lived in Willington, CT at least until 1739 and as late as 1754. Many genealogies show Abiah Gillet as being the wife/mother of this family, but that appears to be a mistake, mixing up the "other" John Slaughter with this one.
