Particularly detailed baptism records for three of their granddaughters confirm Thomas as the son of "John Chatt, smelter, and Elizabeth late Short". John is identified as "the late John Chatt" only in the 1805 baptism record, but is not described as "late" in the 1800 and 1803 records, possibly (though by no means conclusively) suggesting he was alive in 1803 but died before 1805.

From parish register "January 1752 / 30th: John Chatt & Eliz: Short both of this parish were married by banns published by Mr Graham minister." From FHL film# 991801. Note that in item #5 of that film, the marriages 1745-52 are not in the expected place within the item, they are near the front, before earlier marriages.
