Derk Flikkema was the youngest son of Jan Flikkema and Fenna Rozeboom-Flikkema. He worked for his father and later became part owner of the Flikkema Transport trucking business in Spijk Groningen with his three older brothers Albert, Koert and Klaas.

He emigrated to the US with his wife Grietje Iedema-Flikkema and six children 11 August of 1947. The names of the six children are Hendrik Jan (Henry John), Jan (John), Johanna (Joanne), Dirk (Richard), Meindert Willem (Maynard William) and Fenna Grietje (Frances Grace).

The family settled in Montana near Derk's older brothers Piet and Menko and his sisters Eike Flikkema-Danhof and Fenna Flikkema-Potts. When he became a naturalized citizen of the US he Americanized his name to Dick. In the early days after immigrating he was a potato farmer but later he became a holstein dairy farmer in the Galatim Valley just west of Bozeman. The family lived and worked in the Amsterdam and Churchill area of the Gallatin Valley, which is also known as the "Holland Settlement".
