It appears that Daniel and Mary married in either Massachusetts or Rhode Island. Their first daughter is born in Massachusetts (1846); their next three daughters are born in Rhode Island (1849-1852); a last child is born in Illinois in 1856).

Therefore, it appears that Daniel and Mary headed west between about 1854/1855. Daniel is not in the 1860 census with her, and Mary is not back with her mother and sisters in RI in the 1870 census.
