Disambiguation

There are numerous spelling variants for this surname; e.g., Teator, Teater, Teeter; Teater is used here primarily because it seems to be the preferred spelling used by most individuals who claim descent from George.

Some authors give George Teater's full name as "John George Teater", pointing to a Botetourt militia roster of 1779, which lists a person by this name, as supporting evidence. This is not consistent with the movements of George Teater as outlined in the Person:George Teater (1) article; in 1779 we find that George Teater moving from Washington County, Va to Kentucky; he would not have been in a position to join the militia in Botetourt County at that time, and is therefore presumably a different person. Nonetheless, some of those researching George Teater in Garrard County Kentucky often identify him as "John George". They also consider the surname as a corruption of "Dieter". These authors point to a German ancestry, but explicit evidence for this has not been seen. User:Parris emphatically disagrees with this view, and believes John George Dieter/Teeter to be a different person altogether.

Sometimes this person is identified as "George William Teeter". For example: "George William Teater married Sarah Pearis about 1762. He [and] would have of kept her at his father inlaws place Dunkers Bottom while he lived and made a living with Samuel Gibson Teater at a longhunters camp over the mountains in a secret location far in Shawnee Indian territory." The basis for this is not known.
