Jacob Bumgardner (c1791-bet. 1860-1870), of Scott, Russell & Wythe Co., VA & Blount Co., TN

This month, WeRelate looks at the Person Page of Jacob Bumgardner, born abt. 1791 in Virginia. His parentage has not yet been established. Jacob married twice; first to Rebecca Patterson in April 1812 in Augusta County, Virginia. They had two children together before Rebecca died somewhere around 1816. Jacob married 2nd, to Margaret "Peggy" Moyer (1793-aft. 1860) on 4 May 1818 in Wythe County, Virginia; they had five children that reached adulthood. This Jacob Bumgardner has been frequently confused with another Jacob Bumgardner (1795-1875) of Virginia, Illinois and Lawrence County, Ohio, son of Peter Bumgardner (1757-1812) and his wife Frances "Franky" Burner (1766-1854), in fact some researchers, including a Find-A-Grave contributor have combined these two Jacob Bumgardner's into a single person in spite of Census and other records that show they clearly are two different people living in two different states with different wives and children.

This is why it is always important to look at PRIMARY SOURCES to differentiate between persons with the same name that can be easily confused. Secondary sources such as Find-A-Grave, Ancestry, Wikitree and other secondary sources should only be used when they are well sourced and researched. This Person Page, is a good example of the type of Page that you can add to WeRelate for your ancestors. (learn more...)
