I'd like to see "Family Tree" added to the links on the left-hand side of Person pages. Right now it's buried under the "More" menu. Considering how important the ancestor chart is to genealogists, it isn't user-friendly to have it buried under another menu item.
I'd like to see it labelled as "Family Tree" rather than the current "Pedigree - Map", as "pedigree" is a term that is falling out of favor. ("Pedigree" is too "blue-blood" or something that sounds like it refers to a dog or a racehorse.) -- Amy (Ajcrow) 10:28, 22 May 2011 (EDT)
- I've come across an interesting toolkit for displaying data visualizations. Here's an example of displaying a tree: http://thejit.org/static/v20/Jit/Examples/Spacetree/example1.html It's more interactive -- you can pan the tree, click on icons to expand them, and zoom in and out (not shown in the demo). I'd need to customize it of course to display names in the boxes, and to display a popup summary if you hovered over the box. Would having this additional functionality be worth the time to switch family trees to this new toolkit? - I like the functionality of the Spacetree example in the Set as Root mode. That mode seems to better emulate pedigree charts that I'm used to in RootsMagic or TNG. Is it possible to bring the look of it a bit more up-to-date though? Some of the examples at Protovis are nice. --Jennifer (JBS66) 10:18, 31 May 2011 (EDT)
- With Spacetrees you can customize the look of the boxes, but not the lines. Protovis is nice, but less interactive -- you can't zoom and pan for example. How would you want it to change the look: change how the boxes are drawn, or also change the lines to use straight line segments instead of curves?--Dallan 12:59, 10 June 2011 (EDT)
