Next step: Review your GEDCOM [26 September 2009]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded export-Forest.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Your Gedcom File [26 September 2009]

Hello and welcome to WeRelate. Thank you for contributing your gedcom file. I am a volunteer user and I'm looking at your gedcom file. There is a problem with the way names have come over from your software that will need a little fixing before I can process your file. We have a structured format for the names so that people can search and be able to find your pages. I will ask you to do a little cleanup on the Person tab to make your pages more useful to the community. This is where working on your desktop is different from working in a wiki.

  1. Please mark the exclude box to the left of the line for living people. We do not import living people and by unchecking the box, you will be creating a useless empty page. Also the system cannot recognize by rules everyone who might be living, sometimes there isn't enough information. So please check as you review the names and mark any that are possibly living.
  2. Names have to be entered in a certain way for the system search to be able to find your pages for you and others. On the Person tab, you can click Edit in the bottom panel to edit your new page.
    1. Please remove ? where you do not know the surname. Leave it blank and the system will handle inserting Unknown when titling the page.
    2. You have nice descriptors for people with unknown surnames. Please move these to the title suffix field. They will work fine there.
  3. You have one warning for duplicate families. This can be fixed by checking the exclude box on the person and family tabs. Again this is easier than merging them later.
  4. You have warnings for husband and wife same surname. Again these can be fixed more easily if your do it before import. Just leave the wife surname blank.

These problems are minor and can be fixed quickly so I am asking you to consider doing it now. It is more difficult to make these changes after your file has been processed and the pages named. Once you have made any changes you wish to make, please go to Import tab again and click Ready to Import. I will process the file as quickly as I can for you.--Judy (jlanoux) 12:52, 26 September 2009 (EDT)

Your Gedcom File [30 September 2009]

Hi, It appears you couldn't get to work on your gedcom file, so I imported it for you. I noted that you appear to have unchecked the Exclusion box for the Living people. Please don't do that in the future. We do not want to create empty pages for living people. --Judy (jlanoux) 11:38, 30 September 2009 (EDT) (We Relate Volunteer)

Walsh Family in Rochester NY [17 October 2010]

Hi,

I am brand new at the genealogy scene and I have some Walsh's in my tree. I just registered on this site today and am learning how to use it. Please forgive me if the answer is obvious, but I know that Michael Walsh (wife Delia) was my great grandmorther's brother. Michael and Delia are buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester. Could this be the same Walsh's as are noted in your family tree?
