Entering data [22 October 2017]

Hello! I am a volunteer administrator here and a member of our WeRelate:Mentoring team. I have been going over the pages that you entered (mostly last year, I think) and I wanted to give you some tips on entering data that should help you to avoid some common mistakes. There were a lot of duplicate (and sometimes triplicate) pages created that have now been straightened out. Our goal is to only have one page per person, so that everyone researching that person can put their findings onto the same page. Since we are all working from a common database, we have some simple rules that we ask everyone to follow when entering information so that duplicates are avoided and finding family connections will be easier.

  • First of all, WeRelate does not allow pages for living individuals, so please do not create them. If you are working from an obituary, just go ahead and enter the text from the obituary on that person's page in the citation field, but don't create wiki pages for the living family members in the obituary.
  • When creating a page, please only enter the person's birth name. This means you should only enter the maiden surname for women (not their married surname). If you don't know a first name or a birth surname - just leave it blank. This is standard genealogical practice.
  • Please do not enter anything that is not part of the person's legal name into the name field. For example, do not enter Miss, Mr., Rev., Sgt., or anything else like this into the name field. If you don't know the name, just leave the field blank. The program will handle that properly.
  • When you "Add a Person" (create a page), the first thing the program does is check the database to see if a page for that person already exists. Please take a minute to look at the results that are returned to see if there is a match already. If so, just "Select" that existing page, do not "Add" a new page.

Hopefully, most of the duplicates that were entered are now clear. If you have any questions on this process or the tips above, please do not hesitate to ask for assistance. Our volunteers are here to help. I hope you enjoy working at WeRelate. Best Wishes, --cos1776 22:06, 22 October 2017 (UTC)
