Shope Family [13 May 2010]

Hello,

I am a descendant of John Bryan(t) and Catherine Shope who married in Greenup Co KY in 1805. Catherine and John lived in Cabell County, WV, on what became known as Bryan Creek. John died in 1842 and Catherine in 1855. They are buried in the Bryan family cemetery near their farm. Catherine's death record in Cabell Co lists her father's name as "Gabriel." I have concluded that her parents were therefore Gabriel and Polly Shope of Scioto Co OH. There is also a family tradition recorded in the 1920s or 30s that Catherine had lived near Hanging Rock, OH, before her marriage to John Bryan. As you noted they did indeed have a son Gabriel. I have beeen unable to trace the family farther back but there is info circulating on the internet placing them in a Shope/Schaub German immigrant family (see Ancestry's world family tree) but I am uncertain as to how accutrate it is. Catherine's brith state was recorded as VA in the 1850 Census; however, her death record listed North Carolina. One of her children's census records placed her birth in PA. PA to VA to NC does follow the path made by the Shope/Schaub family I mentioned above. There was a Jacob Gabriel Shope said to have lived in Burke Co NC before 1810 and he has been identified as identical to our Gabriel. I do not know for sure yet.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
