Surname: Sparrell [14 March 2010]

Your question about merging Elizabeth Hawkins [14 March 2010]

I noticed your question on Lynn Nelson's talk page, and wasn't sure if she would get back to you soon. The rule of thumb is, if in doubt, DO NOT merge. If you are relatively new to genealogy, you might be surprised by the number of people who shared the same name at the same time in about the same place. You shuold not merge these people without significant evidence (through wills, for example) that they were the same person. Keep them separate until your own further research or someone else's confirms that they are the same person. Given the information you have mentioned, they just as likely are not.

Hope that helps, and feel free to ask me questions on my talk page, although I won't guarantee how quickly I will respond. --DataAnalyst 10:48, 14 March 2010 (EDT)

Next step: Review your GEDCOM [4 May 2010]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded JustMayflower.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate lines and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Problem with families [5 May 2010]

I'm importing your file as requested. But you will need to work on your families. It appears that you had many couples "broken up" by your gedcom export. The best way to tackle this is with the FTE. Bring up this tree and use the List view. To get there choose MyRelate, Trees and then click the Launch FTE link next to your Mayflower tree you just created. The left hand panel has buttons across the middle for the view you want: Ancestors, Descendants, Both, List. The List view looks like a series of lines stacked. You will have to merge the families or you can edit them to add the missing spouse.--Judy (jlanoux) 18:46, 5 May 2010 (EDT) (WeRelate volunteer)

Image Licensing [20 May 2010]

Hi, I am a volunteer admin. I checked with findagrave at using images. Findagrave claims no copyright, but the copyright to photos on findagrave belongs to the person who uploaded it. So, you have two options, get written permission to use the photo or upload a thumbnail (reduce the image considerably) and upload under fair use as a low resolution copy. Please decide what you are going to do with the images, I usually delete unlicensed images after about two weeks. Thanks, :) --sq 23:06, 15 May 2010 (EDT)

I contacted both photographers involved and they gave permission to use--Sparrell 13:29, 20 May 2010 (EDT)

JNSDesc3.ged appears to overlap a previously-imported GEDCOM [20 May 2010]

The pages from this GEDCOM have not yet been generated because they appear to match pages from a GEDCOM you have previously imported to WeRelate.

If you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in this GEDCOM and you want to replace that tree with this GEDCOM, you need to delete that tree first so duplicates aren't created when you import this GEDCOM. Click on Trees in the "My Relate" menu, then click on the "delete" link next to that tree. Please be aware that any pages in the tree that are being watched by others won't get deleted. Once that tree is deleted you can create a new tree and re-upload this GEDCOM into it. (We're planning to make re-uploading GEDCOM files much simpler soon.)

If you don't think you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in this GEDCOM, or if the two GEDCOM's don't overlap that much, leave a message for Dallan or send an email to dallan@WeRelate.org and we'll go ahead with the import.

Question on unknown surnames [14 May 2011]

Hello Sparrell, I noticed something odd with the page titles of your most recent gedcom upload. One example is Person:Margaret Unknown076 (1). Can you tell me if Unknown076 is actually in the surname field in your home database? I'm wondering if this is an error on WeRelate's side or if this came through from your gedcom. Thank you, --Jennifer (JBS66) 07:07, 13 May 2011 (EDT)

Oops. I should have realized that. When I don't know a given first name or last name, I give in a unique name unknownxxx where xxx is a number. That way it's easy to find where I need to do more work. I didn't think about how that would translate up to this site.--Sparrell 12:37, 13 May 2011 (EDT)

I didn't even notice this when I was reviewing your gedcom... If you could search through your contributions (by searching for the word Unknown) and rename both the Person and Family pages to remove the number that would be helpful. Our software thinks it is a valid surname and uses it in the page title. If the field were blank or just Unknown, that would import correctly. If you need any help renaming, just let me know. --Jennifer (JBS66) 12:49, 13 May 2011 (EDT)

Great Migration categories [26 May 2011]

Hi,

I noticed you've one some work on Great Migration immigrants and categories. Welcome! There's lots of work to be done. Some of your changes made me realize that the structure hasn't been very clearly documented as it has evolved. We actually did write out the structure on this page, but it's really hard to find!

Town founder pages aren't there (yet - I'm going to work on that), but the idea there is that there's a template that goes on the person pages, which means it needs to be pretty small - your Scituate template just needs reformatting so it's not one vertical list. But the most useful thing about having a template is to be able to write the "founding" story once with the key dates and other sources about it, which adds useful information to each person's page and reduces (particularly inconsistent) duplication. If there's nothing on the template except a list of names, then a category can serve the same function with a lot less work :-)

If you have any questions, let me know. --Amelia 12:29, 26 May 2011 (EDT)

Sources for Joseph and Rebecca Hurlbut [29 November 2012]

I was wondering where some of the information on Joseph Hurlburt and Rebecca came from. His birth is not recorded in either the published Wethersfield Vital Records or the 1888 Hurlbut genealogy. Are you aware of another credible source for this exact date and place of birth? Also, I have not been able to find any confirmation that his wife's birth surname was Brown. She certainly was not born 1650 at Woodbury since that area was not settled by Europeans until about 1672. I have confirmed both his death and that of his wife Rebecca are recorded in Woodbury Vital Records.--jaques1724 16:06, 27 November 2012 (EST)

I do not know. I believe from my father's notes, and it did not cite a source.--Sparrell 13:41, 29 November 2012 (EST)

Hello!

My name is Raymond H. Brooks , I live in Boston but currently in Mexico. My 2nd great grandparents were Prosper B. HURLBURT & Charoty Shufelt of Underhill, VT.

Many years ago I contacted a direct descendant of Wait Hurlbut that lived in Worcester, Ma but he had passed his wife told me and she was pretty elderly herself and I told her that I was seeking information on the HURLBURTs connected to my family. As I was told her husband had some information in the family bible and other document s but she did not know much about it and said her children had no interst in Geneaology:-(

Anyway , I see you have a connection to Wait and Charity and thought maybe you could share some with me,

I have letters from a Dwyer in Maine of the HURLBURT Bliss and Metcalfs family given to me by another with and charity cousin named Liianne, I am sure if you have been on the Geneaology boards or Googled prosper B.
