Next step: Review your GEDCOM [31 January 2021]

You're not done yet!

Now that you have uploaded Sanders (Master Tree)_2021-01-31.ged into our review program, it is time for you to match your data to ours. Your next step is to review and resolve any potential warnings that your file might be showing and to match place names, source names and families to pages that may already exist in our database.

Notes:

  • You must complete all the steps before your GEDCOM can be considered for import. - We will keep your file in the queue for three months to give you time to finish, and you do not have to finish all at once.
  • If you did not follow the instructions for preparing your data before uploading your file or if your file does not contain at least one date and place for each person with sources, it is likely that your file will be rejected.
  • Volunteers are here to help. Please read the instructions first, but if you get stuck or have any questions, you can leave a message on the page for the GEDCOM review team. One of our volunteers will respond shortly.
  • Once you have completed the review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import on the last screen, one of our volunteer administrators will review the file again and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24-48 hours. Please allow a little extra time around the holidays. When the import is finalized, you will receive a follow up message here on your Talk page.

About your gedcom [4 February 2021]

Hi, Mwsfan. I have been reviewing your Gedcom, which is very large, with nearly 2000 people. Imports this large rarely go well. Among the problems with this Gedcom are: There are serious errors listed under the "Warnings" tab. For just one example, the first one I looked at was for the family of Jeremiah Ellis and Mary Skinner. The message notes that the wife died before the child Mary Ellis was born. This "daughter" was christened sixty years after the death of her supposed mother. Also she was christened in Yorkshire, England, whereas the parents died in Virginia, and the mother was born there. Since this is almost certainly a bogus relationship, it should not be in the file (unless a thorough explanation is given, if it is correct).

There are problems with names. One is that some names have the the text "unknown" or "unk" or "unk."; for import to WeRelate these name fields should be absent or blank. Then there is the person with given name "Ebenezer Doane (5th.GG" and the surname of "F) (George ) (Hanover)", and another person with the given name "Mary Carter (6th.GG" and the surname "M)". I also happened to notice three females who had no given names (unusual, but perhaps okay in particular circumstances), but who had the surnames of Alice, Amy, and Rhoda. These names probably should have instead been the three given names, with absent (unknown) surnames for the women.

The Gedcom has many entries for living people, and for people born before 1750. These cannot be imported as noted in the Help text given under the "People" tag. Normally their presence in the file would not be a large problem as the software has provision to automatically exclude them by marking them as "living" or "early". Unfortunately, the software currently has a bug which prevents it from correctly marking entries. I have stumbled across some pre-1750 that should have been marked; there are probably others and perhaps some that were excluded and should not have been. Given the bug, the only solution at this time to this problem is to regenerate a Gedcom file which does not contain anyone born before 1750. Alternatively, for this particular problem, you could wait for the bug to be fixed, but that is unscheduled and the fix wouldn't likely happen for at least some weeks.

Because of the foregoing issues, this Gedcom can't be imported as it is, and so I have returned control of it back to you. To make progress on the import, I recommend that you generate a much smaller file, one containing just your ancestors back to 1750. The reason for this is that it seems much more likely that the data you have on your direct lines are correct since one naturally does not as thoroughly validate data for one's cousins' lines as for one's own. Limiting the number of people to go over reduces the amount of work involved in discovering and fixing the issues. (One can always later go through the process for additional people and upload them in a later Gedcom.)

May you have success in this project, --robert.shaw 22:36, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
