Next step: Review your GEDCOM [30 December 2013]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Rock2006_2013-12-30.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Please review your duplicates [31 December 2013]

It appears that the gedcom you recently uploaded resulted in a few duplicate families in WeRelate. In some cases (e.g., Edward Rockliffe and Annie Wallis (1) and Edward Rockliffe and Annie Wallis (2)), it appears that you had duplicates in your gedcom file. In other cases (e.g., David Craig and Nancy Means (1) and David Craig and Nancy Means (2)), you have created a page that is a duplicate with a page that already existed.

You can review and merge these duplicate pages by signing on, selecting MyRelate from the top menu, and then Show duplicates. This will show you the duplicate families where you are watching at least one of the pages. From here, you can click on any family and you will be taken to the merge review page. If you are uncertain about how to proceed, please reach out for help. I am not a WeRelate administrator, but I have used the merge function enough to be able to provide guidance. In particular, while no one owns the truth on any given WeRelate page, replacing well-sourced information with unsourced information is discouraged - however, if you have more accurate information that has a reliable source, you are encouraged to make corrections and/or add alternate information.--DataAnalyst 22:27, 31 December 2013 (UTC)

Shervington/Matthews [5 January 2014]

Hi, Steve,

Got your message about the merge of Fanny Phoebe Shervington(Matthews). No, I'm not related. I am, however, a volunteer administrator at WeRelate, where I check duplicate pages. As DataAnalyst indicated in the previous message, you did have a lot of duplicate pages.

I see that you are new to WeRelate, and it is a bit different from other on-line genealogy sites. For one thing, each ancestor should have only one page, so that when two or more researchers are working on the same person, it is easier for them to collaborate. What that means, in part, is that having Duplicate Pages is really discouraged, which is why volunteers, like DataAnalyst and myself, regularly check for Duplicate Pages. Where it seems obvious that the pages really are for the same person, they can be merged into one page, which is what I did for several of your pages. You can see more about merging pages at Help:Merging pages. This page also provides information about what to do if you disagree with the merge.

While you're at it, you might also want to take a look at the Help:Source pages, as I noticed that you did not have any sources for most of the pages I saw. Like you, I uploaded my GEDCOMS without sources, and am (slowly, slowly) entering them by hand. It really helps to have some guidelines to do so, at least until you get used to the process.

In the meantime, welcome to WeRelate. It can take a bit of time to learn your way around the site, but it has so much to offer that it's really worth the effort. --GayelKnott 03:56, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Family tree [18 April 2015]

Dear Sir:

Just wanted to thank you for the pictures that you posted. I have never seen pictures of some of these members of my family and it was really great to see find them here. Ada & Phillip Wright are my great great grandparents. My connection is via there daughter Margaret and her daughter Grace. Grace is my Mom. My Mom is very ill right now with pancreatic cancer and I am with her taking care of her. It was really nice to show her some of the pictures that you listed and to read some of the texts. Some of the details she either does not remember or never knew.

Just wanted to thank you anyway for the chance to share this with my Mom.

Best regards,

Ian Mason--IanUser 23:33, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
