Index numbers on family pages [10 May 2010]

Hello, I am a volunteer admin here at WeRelate. I noticed that you renamed two family pages in a way that does not follow our naming conventions. The index number that appears after person and family pages is automatically generated. Even though you may have a Person:Daniel Root (8) and a Person:Susan Smith (72), the family page would be created in the form: Family:Daniel Root and Susan Smith (#), where the # is automatically generated. I have renamed the two family pages. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, --Jennifer (JBS66) 20:33, 9 May 2010 (EDT)

Thank you - I am new at this but very willing to learn--Geeka2 20:36, 9 May 2010 (EDT)

Whipple website [22 May 2010]

It is not necessary to add a source twice. It is possible to attach one source to multiple facts. It clutters up a page to cite the Whipple website, two, three or more times.

While the Whipple website seems to be reasonable, since if one takes the trouble to look up the Source page, follow the link, then lookup the relevant page, one will find sources cited, but most websites are not. Websites are inherently secondary, possibly questionable, even some that pretend to be the official family organization's website. Rather, it is better to be striving to identify the primary sources that tell how a fact is known, rather than just parrot the fact. Some cases, like where you cited the Whipple website to discuss disputed origins of John Whipple are good, because it is discussing the state of research, which is something it is involved in. But when cited to prove a death date that occurred 300 years before the website was created, clearly the website has no inherent authority, and it would be far preferable to cite a primary record, such as the picture or inscription from a gravestone, or town record, or will, or deed that describes the person as deceased, etc.

Rather than add the RIN, it would be more useful to add the URL of the webpage, since as alluded to, it is not trivial to find the page if you are not familiar with the website. But in either case, websites often renumber, and both could go stale. This is another problem with websites.

Also, with a website, you must be alert to copyright violations (and should abstract what the website asserts rather than use its words), whereas primary records are almost all public domain.

Please use the standard place names. I noticed several times you added "Providence, Providence, Rhode Island" as an alternative to "Providence, Providence, Rhode Island, United States". You did not shorten it enough to be appreciable, and this is an international website so country is not necessarily obvious to all users. You will find several users, myself included, that routinely remove such non-standard names unless they provide something useful, such as a historically different name for a place, and even then, there are better ways to accomplish this such as redirects. --Jrich 09:58, 22 May 2010 (EDT)

Naturalization Certificate for Hugh Clare Gwynn [1 November 2010]

The source you created, Source:Naturalization Certificate for Hugh Clare Gwynn needs to be a MySource page since it's scope is limited to one person. I see that nothing links to that page, so I can either delete it, or you can first move the information to a new MySource page. Please let me know what you'd like to do. Thank you, (volunteer admin) --Jennifer (JBS66) 07:03, 1 November 2010 (EDT)

Family:James Brake and Narcissa Wilgus (1) [17 November 2010]

Hi - I made a change in one of the sources for this family, because Source:Civil War Pension Index -- Genealogy Database for Family History Research no longer leads to a database; instead it leads to Ancestry.com and a generic search. Based on the content of your source, I think the actual source ought to be Source:United States. Civil War and Later Pension Files, since you seem to be citing a particular document in the pension file (versus just an index card). Would you take a look at this and make sure its correct? I don't want to cause a problem in your sourcing... Thanks, --Brenda (kennebec1) 16:40, 17 November 2010 (EST)
