Next step: Review your GEDCOM [5 August 2016]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded crystaleng.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two months to give you time to review it. If your GEDCOM does not contain at least one date and place for each person, preferably with at least one primary or secondary source it will possibly be rejected, See the help pages for how you should prepare your GEDCOM prior to uploading.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Imported without user review

Welcome to the WeRelate community. I noticed that your GEDCOM had been uploaded in September, but hadn't been further processed by you for the next review step. I took a look at it for you, and since it only needed minor fixes, I did those and have imported it for you.

You should know that after uploading a GEDCOM file, users are expected to return to their person pages and family pages to review their data and to add sources. The goal is to have only one page for each person and family and to back up our facts (dates and places) with credible sources.

I hope you enjoy We Relate. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Best Wishes, --cos1776 18:22, 25 November 2016 (UTC), volunteer administrator and member of the Mentoring committee

Next step: Review your GEDCOM [27 October 2020]

You're not done yet!

Now that you have uploaded gedcom tree (1).ged into our review program, it is time for you to match your data to ours. Your next step is to review and resolve any potential warnings that your file might be showing and to match place names, source names and families to pages that may already exist in our database.

Notes:

  • You must complete all the steps before your GEDCOM can be considered for import. - We will keep your file in the queue for two months to give you time to finish, and you do not have to finish all at once.
  • If you did not follow the instructions for preparing your data before uploading your file or if your file does not contain at least one date and place for each person with sources, it is likely that your file will be rejected.
  • Volunteers are here to help. Please read the instructions first, but if you get stuck or have any questions, you can leave a message on the page for the GEDCOM review team. One of our volunteers will respond shortly.
  • Once you have completed the review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import on the last screen, one of our volunteer administrators will review the file again and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24-48 hours. Please allow a little extra time around the holidays. When the import is finalized, you will receive a follow up message here on your Talk page.

Click here to enter the review program
You will see more instructions once you are in.

Merging data [29 October 2020]

Hi

I noticed that in the process of adding GEDCOM data, you created Alt Birth and Alt Death events for some people (e.g., Myrtis Edgar. This happens when you leave both the original data and the new data checked. It is acceptable to do this when the information is different, but when the information is the same, please make sure to uncheck one version of the information so that there is only one event. In this case, the data already on the page should be kept and your GEDCOM information should have been unchecked so that it was not loaded.

Data entry standards at WeRelate (while not fully documented) include GEDCOM standard abbreviations for dates (e.g., 13 Feb 1901) and place names as in the Place page names (i.e., don't include the word County for places in the United States). Thus, for this particular page, the Birth and Death events meet WeRelate data entry standards, while the new Alt facts loaded from the GEDCOM do not.

If you need assistance with merging, please reach out and someone (myself or someone else) will help. Thanks--DataAnalyst 23:43, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

GEDCOM import checking [31 October 2020]

Hello, Crystaleng. I've been reviewing your Gedcom submission. I see that you've been busy adding new data from your file into the existing profiles that matched with people in the file; I'm glad to see you included source citations. Those changes are now part of the WeRelate site. The entirely new person profiles, though, have not yet been imported.

There are a few changes needed before I can cause the file to be imported. Fortunately, the Gedcom review software provides a reasonably easy way to make such changes. The items needing fixing are among those listed under the "Warnings" tab in the review program (which is linked from the automated message on your User Talk page). When you click on a line under the Warnings tab, it brings up the relevant person or family that shows the issue which the warning line describes. Often the fix for the issue is to change a piece of data that is on that very page, or is on a person page that is linked from that page. (In the latter case, you can go to that page by clicking on the name of the person.) Just to be clear, the pages presented in this way are showing data from your Gedcom file; these pages have not yet been entered into the normal WeRelate collection of Person and Family pages. If you look closely, you will see that there is a special "Edit" link just under the person's name at the top of the presented page. (This is different from the similar link on a normal WeRelate page, where the "Edit" link is in the lefthand side-bar.) If you click that "Edit" link under the name, you will bring up an editing page similar to the normal WeRelate editing page. On that page you can alter the date, place, or other data which needs fixing, and then click on the "Save page" button. This will effectively change the data that was read in from the Gedcom file (but doesn't yet affect the normal WeRelate page collection).

Not all of the lines under the "Warnings" tab necessarily need to be fixed. Some of them are just calling attention to situations which may be correct but often occur because of wrong data. (For instance, when a man is over 70 when he marries; this certainly really occurs, but often the data shows this because of a mistyped birth or wedding date.) Other lines may be for issues that may need fixing, but not necessarily immediately.

In this Gedcom, the four "error" level lines show issues that definitely need addressing. (You can bring these lines to the top by clicking on the "Level" column heading to sort the lines.) You should also go through all 18 "warning" level lines, as most (but perhaps not all) flag things that are real errors that need fixing. You'll also want to examine many of the remaining ("alert" level) lines and their person pages, as they also show things that may need fixing (or other action, like checking "exclude" for a person to skip import for them). For instance, the "Wife was more than 45 years old when child was born" alert lines show situations which usually (but not always) indicate error of some kind, such a mistyped date or a child assigned to the wrong family. For handling the "alert" lines, you may prefer to click on the "Description" column header to sort the alerts-of-a-feather together.

I will return the state of this Gedcom to "uploader review" so that you can make the needed changes. Once that is done, you can again use the "Ready to import" button and hopefully things will then flow smoothly. If you have questions or need more help, feel free to contact me on my talk page or here on your talk page (which I will be watching). There are also the Support and Watercooler pages available. --robert.shaw 20:42, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
