Next step: Review your GEDCOM [3 May 2016]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Walter Marstin 1 Export.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two months to give you time to review it. If your GEDCOM does not contain at least one date and place for each person, preferably with at least one primary or secondary source it will possibly be rejected, See the help pages for how you should prepare your GEDCOM prior to uploading.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Important Question [5 May 2016]

Hi, I am an administrator with WeRelate and I am currently looking at ways to make the GEDCOM uploading experience better.

I noticed you recently uploaded a GEDCOM, can I ask you if you read the help pages and FAQ's about the upload process, especially the preparing your GEDCOM for upload steps? If you did not read or do the things suggested would you mind telling me why not, it will help to make the process better if I can understand where we may be failing.

My recommendation would be to test the working of WeRelate by first trying a small GEDCOM, perhaps 50 people, say the ancestors and spouses of one of your grandparents or great-grandparents.

You can edit this page and add your comments below, see Talk page help for more about this, or you can email me from my profile page if you prefer a private discussion.--Rhian 07:42, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

Gedcom Review [9 May 2016]

Hi

I am reviewing you gedcom prior to import, there are a couple of small problems.

The names you have are in all capital letters, this does not conform with our names policy, as it is only a few people this could easily be done after import.

You have not matched all the places to our places database, this will affect some of the advanced feature you may want to use, once again with such a small number it could be done after import.

The more important question I have is none of the sources you have are matched to community sources. Matching some to our sources makes life simpler for everyone, you do not need to create souce links and info pages, community sources are already maintained and contain lots of information. It is not a requirment to use community sources but I wanted to check you understood how sources work at WeRelate.

If you are happy with the way things are now and want it imported as it is with knowledge that you will need to do some editing later then please let me know by editing this page and adding your reply below. The same applies if you have any questions or comments, in the meantime I am returning the gedcom to your review, after you have replied to this message you can click the import button again.--Rhian 09:22, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

RMG

I find the We Relate website rather unintuitive and hard going. I suppose I just have to keep using it to get better.

I take well all your points. My GEDCOM is small deliberately so that I can learn from the import without too much damage. I had intended to do most of the fixing after import. My family history program has all names in capitals. This can be changed post import. I have done a few more matching of places and assigning community sources in review status. I understand that single BMD certificates are in the 'My Source' category not 'community sources'. With letters and emails I am a bit concerned about putting them up with names of folk who might resent it. I am trying to cite these evidences in My Source without names of living people.

Thanks for your remarks.

Hi
thanks for getting back to me, WeRelate is a big complex place but it does get easier to use fairly quickly.
It is a good idea to start small, I usually upload family groups of 10 to 50 people, it is much easier to keep on top of it all, and it is very good that you are removing personal details like emails, I will approve the import and help out a bit with the tidying. If there are any questions or problems you can message me or post on the watercooler or support pages, lots of us use helping new members as an excuse not to do research on our own lines :)
I hope you enjoy sharing with us. --Rhian 09:53, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
